The Dyson V15 Detect is the best cordless stick for pet hair — its anti-tangle Motorbar and laser detection find and free embedded fur that other sticks miss. The Tineco Pure ONE Station 5 is the best value with a self-empty dock, and the Dirt Devil Power Swerve Pet covers sofas for under $130.
Pet hair breaks sticks the same way it breaks robots — wrapping brushrolls and filling bins — but sticks add a third failure mode: the mini turbo tools that matter most for upholstery are often weak afterthoughts. We weighted this ranking toward anti-tangle main brushes, motorized pet tools, and machines that keep pulling after ten minutes of sofa duty.

We run every candidate through the same gauntlet: a long-haired-dog sofa cushion, a week of accumulated car mat fur, and a shedding-season area rug. Anti-tangle claims die fast on the sofa cushion; only the Motorbar, ZeroTangle and Tangle Guard systems came back clean after our 20-minute torture loop.
The sleeper feature is the dock. Shedding season fills a handheld bin in two rooms, and the Station 5's self-empty station is why it ranks above cheaper sticks that clean nearly as well.
The anti-tangle generation does — Motorbar (Dyson), ZeroTangle (Tineco) and Tangle Guard (Hoover) genuinely resist wrap. Older bristled brushes will need weekly scissor duty.
For sofas and car seats, yes — suction alone can't cut hair out of upholstery weave. Check that the model includes a powered pet brush, not just a crevice tool.
Both, ideally: a robot for daily floors, a stick (with pet tool) for sofas, stairs and the car. If you must pick one and have mostly hard floors, the stick is more versatile.
Every 2-4 weeks in heavy season; clogged filters quietly halve suction long before the machine complains.
